FALDP Certification for Florida Legal Document Preparers

By: PRLog
The Florida Association of Legal Document Preparers is now well into our sixth year! Formed in May of 2010, this trade association continues to grow, adding new members, and assisting pro se litigants statewide. FALDP - Empowering the People.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Aug. 26, 2015 - PRLog -- An increasing number of Florida consumers are pursuing their legal matters as self-represented litigants. In fact, 70% of the litigants in Florida family courts do not have an attorney. For many Floridians, the cost of attorney fees is completely unaffordable. Nonlawyer legal document preparers are a reasonable alternative. Legal document preparers can provide information, explain procedure, and prepare documents for the self-represented.

There is no Florida government requirement that nonlawyer document preparers must be certified. However, to better serve consumers, the Florida Association of Legal Document Preparers is now offering certification for members..

As of June 2015, FALDP members have the opportunity to become FALDP Certified. FALDP has always required that prospective members meet minimum standards, which may include experience preparing documents for pro se litigants; law firm experience as a paralegal; academic training; or a combination of experience and training.

By adding the "FALDP Certified LDP" designation the world will know which legal document preparers have taken the time, and initiative to go the extra mile. There is a three step process to certification. Pass a Basic Skills Test; pass a Focus Area Test; and complete at least 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Once certified, member document preparers must complete 10 CEUs each year to maintain their certification.

Consumers benefit by being able to easily discover out whether a document preparer has taken the time to become certified.

Members earn CEUs in a variety of ways including taking online courses, attending webinars, and participating in FALDP events. Study materials for the Basic Skills Test will be available at no charge to members in October/ November 2015. An informational webinar focusing on FALDP Certification is scheduled for August 29. Learn more about FALDP membership on our site. The Sixth Annual FALDP Conference in Daytona Beach on September 19, 2015 will provide even more information and an easy way to get a headstart on CEUs.

Members can certify in Family Law, Immigration and Bankruptcy. Focus area testing will be available in February/ March 2016. There is no charge for certification or testing for the fiscal year ending June 1, 2016.

Our Association exists to help consumers access the legal system by providing resources and document preparation assistance. The association's website, www.faldp.org, is itself a resource, with information about court procedure, detailed articles, online courses, and a Membership Directory which advertises the services of member document preparers statewide.
