Swinomish Chairman Brian Cladoosby, stands on the shores of the Salish Sea with a net in his hand, fish in his net his father cooking salmon on the beach for family and fellow fishermen.  With a sigh he shares this, “for thousands of years we have seen the Salish Sea being destroyed by a pollution based economy. Today is a new beginning as we make a change for the future of our children’s children. “

“At Swinomish, like our fellow Washington Treaty Tribes, we depend on clean water for the sustainability of our treaty resources, human health of our tribal members and the future of the environment for this great State,” shares Chairman Cladoosby. “We stand by our federal trustee, the US Environmental Protection Agency for upholding their mission to protect the human health of all Washington citizens with a decision of 175 g/day for fish consumption and a cancer risk level to remain at the current established 10-6 or one in a one million benchmark.”

According to Chairman Cladoosby, the tribe was hoping Washington State would do the right thing.  "To be honest, it has taken 20 years plus of working side by side with our Washington Treaty Tribes to move the State to adopt revised water quality standards that will uphold the Clean Water Act and provide a prosperous future for us all," said Chairman Cladoosby.

"Today is a first step of doing the right thing," shared Chairman Cladoosby.
