Robert Stern, PhD, professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and anatomy and neurobiology at Boston University School of Medicine, is the Director of the Clinical Core of the BU ADC and oversees the HOPE study, the flagship research project of the center. The partnership establishes the Wingate Residences as the primary site outside of the medical campus where Dr. Stern’s team will conduct research study visits for existing and new participants in the HOPE study.

About the HOPE Study
The Health Outreach Program for the Elderly (HOPE) study is the flagship research project of the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center (BU ADC). The BU ADC is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is one of only 27 similar centers across the country, all working together to improve our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) so that one day we will live in a world without this devastating disease.
The HOPE study is a longitudinal research investigation of several hundred participants from all around Greater Boston and New England. The group of participants includes some people who are cognitively healthy, some who have early symptoms of AD (sometimes referred to as Mild Cognitive Impairment), and some who have the dementia caused by AD. HOPE participants are evaluated annually for a half-day examination consisting of physical and neurological examinations, formal tests of memory and other cognitive skills, and a blood draw for genetic and other measurements. Some participants have been involved in the HOPE study for almost 20 years. However, new participants are enrolled on an ongoing basis.
In addition to providing the researchers with valuable information to answer important scientific questions, HOPE participants are also routinely asked if they would like to volunteer for other research studies, including: state-of-the-art investigations of new methods to diagnose AD accurately and early (even before symptoms begin), clinical trials of new medications to treat and prevent AD symptoms; studies of genetic and other risk factors; projects to examine the effect of exercise on memory; projects aimed at understanding the impact of dementia on family and other caregivers; and several studies on the long-term consequences of repetitive head impacts, such as those experienced by football players and other athletes.
