Affiliation Establishes New Evaluation Site for BU ADC’s HOPE Study, Facilitates Education and Training Opportunities
NEEDHAM, Mass. - Oct. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- The Wingate Residences, a leading senior living community located on the Wingate at Needham campus in Needham, Massachusetts, today announced its partnership with Boston University School of Medicine and their Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center (BU ADC), which is one of only 27 Alzheimer’s disease centers funded by the National Institutes of Health. This partnership aligns with Wingate’s Memory Care 360˙ program mission to enhance the lives of seniors coping with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases.

Robert Stern, PhD, professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and anatomy and neurobiology at Boston University School of Medicine, is the Director of the Clinical Core of the BU ADC and oversees the HOPE study, the flagship research project of the center. The partnership establishes the Wingate Residences as the primary site outside of the medical campus where Dr. Stern’s team will conduct research study visits for existing and new participants in the HOPE study.

“We are thrilled about this new affiliation between the Wingate Residences and the BU Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center,” said Stern. “I look forward to working closely with the leadership and staff at the Wingate Residences in the days and years to come as we jointly promote education, research, and the very best care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of dementia. My staff and I are eager to start seeing our returning and new research participants at the Wingate Residences for their study evaluations for the HOPE study. The convenience of the Needham location and the beautiful and inviting environment will be appreciated by all.”

“It is a privilege for the Wingate Residences to be selected by Dr. Stern and the BU Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center as a site for their research,” said Wingate Healthcare President Scott Schuster. “Dr. Stern and his team are on the front lines of Alzheimer’s research, examining both causes and future treatments for this difficult disease. This partnership will introduce aggressive thinking and education, adding a new dimension to our Memory Care 360˙ program at the Wingate Residences. We’re pleased to be able to facilitate Dr. Stern’s research with the HOPE Study in Needham.”

Stern’s affiliation with Wingate will introduce leading research and expertise to Wingate’s Memory Care 360˙ program, which provides person-centric, dynamic care for residents living with Alzheimer’s and memory-related diseases. Working together with Dr. Stern, the Wingate Residences’ Executive Director Maria Lastoria and Memory Care Services Director A.J. Plummer will facilitate educational and training programs related to Alzheimer’s disease and similar disorders.

About the HOPE Study

The Health Outreach Program for the Elderly (HOPE) study is the flagship research project of the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center (BU ADC). The BU ADC is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is one of only 27 similar centers across the country, all working together to improve our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) so that one day we will live in a world without this devastating disease.

The HOPE study is a longitudinal research investigation of several hundred participants from all around Greater Boston and New England. The group of participants includes some people who are cognitively healthy, some who have early symptoms of AD (sometimes referred to as Mild Cognitive Impairment), and some who have the dementia caused by AD. HOPE participants are evaluated annually for a half-day examination consisting of physical and neurological examinations, formal tests of memory and other cognitive skills, and a blood draw for genetic and other measurements. Some participants have been involved in the HOPE study for almost 20 years. However, new participants are enrolled on an ongoing basis.

In addition to providing the researchers with valuable information to answer important scientific questions, HOPE participants are also routinely asked if they would like to volunteer for other research studies, including: state-of-the-art investigations of new methods to diagnose AD accurately and early (even before symptoms begin), clinical trials of new medications to treat and prevent AD symptoms; studies of genetic and other risk factors; projects to examine the effect of exercise on memory; projects aimed at understanding the impact of dementia on family and other caregivers; and several studies on the long-term consequences of repetitive head impacts, such as those experienced by football players and other athletes.
