Proactively Creating a Recovery Plan

A drug rehab program or alcohol treatment program will be staffed with professional and experienced case managers who work with the medical staffNumerous studies have shown that the intelligence put to work in the service of an addiction is typically higher than normal.

There are few people who can function at a high level while drunk, stoned or otherwise impaired. Those who can perform to a good standard while impaired are uniquely intelligent and able to see things at a higher level. Thinking strategically and being able to act at a tactical level is a skillset that many employers want to see! The planning that each person suffering from addiction undertakes to maintain their addiction is proof positive of the skill set that can be leveraged to create a recovery plan in treatment.

A drug rehab program or alcohol treatment program will be staffed with professional and experienced case managers who work with the medical staff, mental health professionals and the patient to structure the plan the addict will use to achieve sobriety. This co-planning process will work better and be more adaptable.  The successful program will support the addict in the months and years following rehab if the addict can participate in the planning process for their own treatment.

The successful recovery plan is developed based on the patient’s presenting symptoms. The addiction or addictions that the patient presents with when entering rehab are first assessed.  The detox process will then be managed, based on those issues. However, during the same intake process, the mental health experts and medical professionals will be taking account of the patient’s emotional standing, in terms of their thinking, reasoning and ability to relate to their feelings. The medical team will be assessing the patient’s need for supportive services. Sometimes the ravages of addiction behavior will take quite a toll on the patient’s body.  Remediating the dental, nutritional and other medical needs of the patient must be addressed, in order to support a working, active recovery program.

The plan for the patient’s sobriety will be established by the entire team supporting and helping the addict, in conjunction with the addict himself. There will be opportunities to review and revise the plan, as the addict progresses through recovery.  Most changes will be put in place to help ameliorate the therapeutic needs that arise as the patient reaches stages within their first addiction treatment plan. There should be an open and ongoing dialogue between the professionals treating the patient, the patient themselves, and the patient’s support people outside the recovery program, in order to constantly review what the needs of the patient are.
