A presentation ceremony presenting the check to Cheryl Walsh, founder and president of the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation, for a Santa Clara Police Department K‐9, will take place on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Santa Clara City Council Chambers.
“The Santa Clara Police Department is appreciative of the generous contributions from the Rotary Club of Santa Clara and the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation. The K‐9 will serve as a dual-purpose dog for detecting explosives and tracking suspects,” said Chief Michael Sellers.
“We are very grateful for this generous donation by the Rotary Club of Santa Clara,” said Cheryl Walsh, founder and president of the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation. “The community and businesses of the City of Santa Clara have embraced our Foundation, the same way the Santa Clara Police Department embraced my son as an Explorer Cadet. The Rotary Club of Santa Clara’s donation reflects their commitment to the safety of the citizens of the City of Santa Clara. We are happy to be able to pass along their commitment through our Foundation,” she added.
“We are very pleased and honored to support and partner with the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation,” said Joe Sweeney, the Rotary of Santa Clara’s donation sponsor. “This donation and partnership underscores our support to the Santa Clara Police Department by helping them with the right tools to do their job in keeping our community safe,” he added.
Their first grant was to the Santa Clara Police Department in April of 2012, resulting in the purchase of K-9 Argo, followed by K-9 Dex in 2014 and K-9 Ranger earlier this year. This grant from the Rotary Club of Santa Clara will greatly assist the non-profit to fulfill their commitment to the Santa Clara Police Department. The grant to the Foundation will be used exclusively for a Santa Clara Police Department K-9.
In addition to grants to the Santa Clara Police Department, the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation has provided (or is committed to providing) grants that have resulted in the purchase of thirteen (13) K-9s throughout Northern California, the Central Valley and in Central New York. They are currently fundraising to provide more grants by the end of 2015.

Established in December 2011, the Sean M. Walsh K9 Memorial Foundation is fulfilling the dream of California Army National Guard SPC Sean M. Walsh, killed on November 16, 2011 in Khost, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Although he was not a K-9 handler, the adoption of a German Shepherd when he was 12 inspired Sean to not only achieve his goal of becoming a law enforcement officer but to have a dream to some day become a K9 handler.
