Mixed open on earnings new

The markets markets opened mixed with the Dow rising 31 points to 17,860 while Nasdaq slipped 3 points to 5,123 as investors digested earnings news.

On the upside

Activision Blizzard (Nasdaq: ATVI) will pay a premium of approximately $5.9 billion in cash to acquire Candy Crush creator King Digital Entertainment (NYSE: KING).

RetailMeNot (Nasdaq: SALE) reported better than expected third quarter earnings and revenue.

Shares of XOMA (Nasdaq: XOMA) rose ahead of its earnings release Thursday after market close.

 

On the downside

AMAG Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: AMAG) fell to a loss for the third quarter.

Navios Maritime Partners (NYSE: NMM) disappointed with lower third quarter earnings that fell short of expectations.

Third quarter earnings for Avis Budget Group (Nasdaq: CAR) missed analyst estimates.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of 7 to 5 on the NYSE and by nearly 5 to 4 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 lost 5 points to 2,099. Bitcoin leaped $32 to $382.
