From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of raw silk. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
Italy and Romania were among the other main global suppliers of raw silk in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Malaysia (+60% per year) and Germany (+15% per year). Romania significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, China’s top 5 trading partners were India, Romania, Viet Nam, Japan and Italy, with a combined 86% share of China’s raw silk exports. The share of Romania increased significantly (+10 percentage points), while the share of India illustrated negative dynamics (-16 percentage points).
