In Elf The Musical a young orphan child named William “Buddy” Hobbs accidentally crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and ends up being transported back to the North Pole. Later on, Buddy comes to find out that he is actually a normal human being and sets off to New York City to find his dad, Walter Hobbs. Buddy does find his dad, however, his dad doesn’t believe in the gift giving spirt of Christmas as do many other New Yorkers in the story. This becomes an issue since Santa’s sleigh gets its power by the people’s belief in Christmas. Buddy sets out to show his family the real meaning of Christmas.
There are a few differences in the musical and the film with the main difference being that the story in the musical is said to have begun three years ago instead of thirty years ago like in the movie. Also, the story is narrated by Santa Claus instead of Papa Elf. The musical also adds more to the story regarding Buddy’s half brother Michael’s doubting if Santa Claus is real.
