Digital agency Clock, recently announced the launch of a new European multilingual fan site for European League of Legends esports. Clock designed and built the fully responsive site to not only withstand huge traffic spikes during competitive game broadcasts, but also provide the latest news and content, team statistics, live game streaming and catchup that can be easily tailored to fit local audiences.

Esports – competitive video gaming – has become a global phenomenon. Professional players and teams are sponsored by multinational corporations such as Samsung, Coca-Cola and Red Bull. The annual League of Legends World Championship sees professional teams competing from North America, Europe, Korea, China, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau plus two International Wildcard regions. Live battles are performed in international stadia and streamed online with intense interest; in 2015 online viewing figures for the League of Legends World Championship final hit 36 million worldwide*.

The new site has launched initially in French, German, Spanish and Polish. It aims to deliver a world-class experience for followers of the European LoL professional teams and to introduce new players into the competitive arena with compelling local content.

The fan community is at the centre of the new design. LoL fans are highly engaged and are keen to consume as much content as possible, be it game news, video coverage, league tables or statistics. Social sharing is fully integrated into the design and features include the facility to show or hide game results that have taken place before the user has caught up on streamed games that they may have missed.

For the Rioters (journalists commissioned by Riot Games) who are populating the site with great content, Clock’s development team built a bespoke Content Management System (CMS) that has vastly improved and streamlined the workflows of the global content editors.

“Riot’s target audience are naturally vocal digital natives, so the site demanded a very high quality experience. We worked closely with the team at Riot to get a real sense of esports and to channel the emotion and passion of the fans into the designs and ensure they can easily find the content they want,” said Steve Fewings, Art Director at Clock.

“With more developments in store for the coming months, we are extremely excited to be working with such a giant of the gaming world.” Rob Arnold, COO at Clock added.
