New Zealand continued its dominance in the global ghee trade. In 2014, New Zealand exported 228 thousand tonnes of ghee totaling 691 million USD, 18% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 12% of its total ghee exports in value terms, accounting for 78% of China’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, New Zealand was a net exporter of ghee. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced, except for 2012, 2013 and 2014 when high import prices made it more notable.
The Netherlands and Belgium were among the other main global suppliers of ghee in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Ireland (+34% per year) and New Zealand (+17% per year). New Zealand significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, New Zealand’s top 5 trading partners were China, the U.S., the Philippines, Algeria and Saudi Arabia, with a combined 44% share of New Zealand’s ghee exports. The share of China increased (+9 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points). The shares of the other New Zealand’s trading partners showed more moderate dynamics.
