"A film of mounting domestic anxiety, creative frustration and dangerous mind games," writes film critic and historian David Luhrssen of Shepherd Express.

"The Scarapist,"™ from the essay and screenplay penned by Jeanne Marie Spicuzza, is based on a true story. The movie stars Spicuzza, Katy Colloton of TV Land's "Teachers" and R. Michael Gull.

The European Film Market, or EFM, is part of the Berlin International Film Festival, a cultural event known as Berlinale. Over 720 films screened out of competition at the 2016 Berlinale EFM. The VDKUF awarded "The Scarapist,"™ co-directed by Synthian Sharp and Spicuzza, best picture. The prize is grounded on artistic merit.

Additional awards were given to best actor Thomas Blanchard, for his portrayal of Cédric in "Préjudice," and best actress Michelle Rodriguez as Frank Kitchen/Tomboy in "Tomboy: a Revenger's Tale," also starring Sigourney Weaver. "The Wild Life" by Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot won best animated film. The VDKUF awarded best documentary film to "P.S. Jerusalem" by Danae Elon. River Road Entertainment's "Seline" by Luciano Silighini Garagnani won best short film.

Founded in 2006, the VDKUF is an association of German critics and filmmakers headed by Thomas Avner. The VDKUF organizes annual events and activities for film festivals worldwide. In celebration of their tenth anniversary, the VDKUF bestowed their Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar-winning actor and director, George Clooney.

Not in attendance, Spicuzza discovered news of the VDKUF Award through an article in Cinema Italiano.

"I contacted Luciano, who was wonderful," said Spicuzza. "He connected me with Terry Mauger of the Verein Deutscher Kritiker und Filmemacher, or VDKUF. I emailed Terry at the offices of the VDKUF on Potsdamer Strasse. He congratulated me on 'The Scarapist.'™"

Spicuzza has also contacted representatives of Berlinale EFM, like Tilmann Vierzig. One Berlinale representative has confirmed receipt of VDKUF Award details, and has been very supportive.

"The VDKUF is a breakout award for us," said Spicuzza. "We're very honored."
