Dolby Previews New Technology for Mobile Entertainment at Mobile World Congress

At the 2009 GSMA Mobile World Congress, Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB), is unveiling details of Dolby® Media Generator, a preprocessing and encoding solution for mobile multimedia content. The company is also showing the latest Dolby Mobile implementation on the LG ARENA (LG-KM900) mobile phone, the first handset for the global market to deliver a surround sound experience for multimedia content.

Located at booth 7C51 in the Fira de Barcelona, Dolby is demonstrating how Dolby Media Generator will complement Dolby Mobile. Together, they will offer a dual-ended solution to enhance mobile entertainment delivered over the air to mobile phones.

“We are committed to providing a more immersing experience to mobile entertainment consumers,” said Rolf Schmitz, Marketing Director, Mobile, Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby Mobile and Dolby Media Generator are intended to make mobile entertainment more compelling. These technologies are designed to work together, and can help the industry create products and services that will deliver a superior entertainment experience from content creation to content playback.”

Dolby Media Generator

Dolby Media Generator, a media encoding solution for content viewed on mobile devices, will use open standard technologies and will leverage Dolby’s experience. Dolby Media Generator will use unique coding efficiencies that reduce files size and simultaneously deliver superb sound. Aimed at service providers and content distributors, Dolby Media Generator, a batch processing software tool, will enable the ingestion and management of content files for delivery over mobile networks.

Dolby Media Generator will feature Dolby Pulse, an audio codec that combines the efficiency of HE AAC with Dolby’s renowned experience and capabilities for reliable, high-quality end-to-end software integrations. Content encoded in Dolby Pulse ensures portability and integrity of media content and is backward compatible with existing HE AAC devices. HE AAC is a widely adopted 3GPP standard used by four of the world’s top five handset manufacturers.

Dolby Media Generator will provide automatic validation and repair of source media to optimize quality control; it will also add metadata for better content discovery, as well as more accurate tracking, reporting, and file presentation.

“With Dolby Media Generator, we see a significant advance for delivery of exceptional media content over the air. The industry will be able to improve audio quality, reduce file sizes, enhance the consumer experience, and provide a branded solution that consumers recognize and value,” said Schmitz.

Dolby Mobile

Dolby is also showcasing the latest mobile phones to use Dolby Mobile for a premium listening experience. Today, Dolby Mobile is available in 11 phones worldwide, including the LG ARENA, the LG Renoir, and 9 models from Sharp created for the Japan market.

Mobile World Congress will mark the worldwide launch of the LG ARENA, LG’s new flagship model for 2009, which is the first multimedia handset for the global market to use Dolby Mobile to deliver an exhilarating surround sound experience for video content and enhance the sound of music content.
