The holidays are here and Christmas is right around the corner, which means consumers are hitting the malls and hitting them hard. Participating in annual gift-giving is no surprise, but what is surprising is that amid the record-setting 2011 shopping season, some companies still are missing the mark for the year.
I watch more than 5,000 publicly traded companies with my Portfolio Grader tool, ranking companies by a number of fundamental and quantitative measures. This week, I’ve got seven specialty retail stocks to sell.
Here they are, in alphabetical order. Each one of these stocks gets a “D” or “F” according to my research, meaning it is a “sell” or “strong sell.”
Aeropostale (NYSE:ARO) sells casual apparel and accessories primarily to teenagers. A 38% drop for ARO stock in 2011 has left shareholders questioning their purchase. ARO stock gets a “D” for sales growth, an “F” for operating margin growth, a “D” for earnings growth and a “D” for earnings momentum in my Portfolio Grader tool. Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) operates retail stores that sell consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment products, appliances and related services. In the last year, BBY stock is down 33%. Guess? (NYSE:GES) is involved with apparel and accessories for men, women and children. GES stock is down 40% in 2011, compared to small gains by the broader markets. GES stock gets a “D” for sales growth, a “D” for operating margin growth, a “D” for its ability to exceed the consensus earnings estimates on Wall Street, a “D” for the magnitude in which earnings projections have increased during the past month and “D” for cash flow in my Portfolio Grader tool. Office Depot (NYSE:ODP) is a global supplier of office products and services. ODP is the biggest loser on this list, down 60% in the past 12 months. RadioShack (NYSE:RSH) is a retailer of consumer electronics. Year-to-date, RSH stock has shed about half its value, compared to a gain of 5% for the Dow Jones in the same time. Staples (NASDAQ:SPLS) is an office-supply company that serves customers in 26 countries. SPLS stock has dipped nearly 38% since the start of 2011. Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) operates under the brands Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, Leifsdottir and BHLDN. Since the start of 2011, URBN stock has dropped 25%.
